The Opportunity

The Compliance and Risk Manager facilitates research and innovation by administering programs that provide ethical and regulatory oversight. This individual serves as a resource to Investigators and administrative and scientific staff in the management of compliance issues affecting a private non-profit biomedical research institute. Primary responsibilities fall into the following categories: policy, risk management, responsible conduct of research, scientific misconduct, regulatory oversight, export control and conflicts of interest. The person in this role will be responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining policies and procedures across all of these areas, and will conduct regular detailed assessments to identify potential risks that may hinder the reputation, safety, security and financial prosperity of the Morgridge Institute for Research. Additional duties include monitoring research activity that involves regulatory oversight to ensure compliance; monitoring changes in the regulatory environment and assist with the interpretation of emerging federal, state and local laws and regulations, as it relates to the review and oversight of research compliance; and creating, implementing and maintaining solutions to deal with potential threats including health and safety policies, disaster recovery measures, and business continuity plans. Other miscellaneous duties will be required.


Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required, plus 3-5 years of related compliance experience, at least 2 years of which should be in a non-profit, university, or government research setting, or equivalent combination of related education and experience. Additional requirements include knowledge of U.S. federal regulations governing research; experience interpreting & implementing rules and regulations and the demonstrated ability to deal effectively and confidentially with difficult situations and with diverse individuals and teams at all organizational levels. Tact, diplomacy, professionalism, and flexibility are required, along with the ability to adapt to changing work requirements. Candidates must have a high degree of professional integrity and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Strong client service orientation, effective oral and written communication skills and independent problem solving and analytical skills are also required, along with the ability to establish and meet deadlines, perform multiple tasks simultaneously with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and effectively prioritize tasks and responsibilities. Demonstrated strong computer skills with working knowledge of computer software programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is also essential. Prior experience working with scientific research personnel is highly desirable.
